Portland Observer, 8 Jan 1896

Thomas Mathews died at his home in Orange township on Tuesday night last, of 
consumption, aged 41 years.  He had been sick for about four years and during his 
last sickness he was confined to the bed upward of nine weeks.  He was an 
honorary member of the K. O. T. M. of this village, but carried no insurance in 
the order.  The funeral was held on Friday last and burial made in Portland 
cemetery, a number of the knights from Portland tent accompanying the remains 
from his home to the grave.  Mr. Mathews carried $1,000 insurance in the “Star of 
Bethlehem,” a mutual benefit association.  A widow and one daughter survive him.
