Mathews, Mother of Ionia City Attorney, to Be Buried Sunday. Mrs. Carrie E. Mathews, wife of George B. Mathews, died at 1 o’clock Friday morning in St. Lawrence hospital, Lansing, where she went two weeks ago for diagnosis of an ailment which had troubled her for the past year. Mrs. Mathews after a week at the hospital underwent a serious operation for intestinal obstruction, but her condition seemed to favor recovery following the operation. Sunday, however, she apparently was not so well and Monday she took a noticeable turn for the worse. Wednesday night her family was notified of her critical condition and her death was momentarily expected Wednesday night and Thursday. Mrs. Mathews was born in Orange township, April 27, 1868, her parents being Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Gates pioneer residents of the county, her father operating a mill on Libhard creek during those early years. Mr. and Mrs. Mathews had resided in Ionia county virtually all of their married life, coming to Ionia five years ago from Portland, and making their home at 256 East Washington street which they purchased and remodeled to their liking. Mrs. Mathews had always been a home-loving woman, of Christian character, and devoted to her family as wife and mother. Her church affiliations had been with the Methodists and for many years she attended the LeValley church when a resident of that locality. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors at Portland. Surviving her are the husband George B. Mathews, one child, Glenn D. Mathews, city attorney of Ionia, a sister, Mrs. Nellie Colwell, of Chowchilla, California, and a brother, Claude Gates of Detroit. The funeral services will be held from the home of her son, Glenn D. Mathews, 260 East Main street, Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock. The interment will be in Highland Park cemetery. The services will be conducted by Dr. Paul L. Stewart.
