Mathews, 69, died shortly before 11 o’clock Saturday night at his Ionia home, 256 East Washington street. Mr. Mathews had been ailing since Thanksgiving when he was stricken with influenza, but he felt that he was well on the road to recovery, when a heart attack early Saturday morning developed late that day into a condition so critical that several hours before his death, the outcome appeared inevitable. Funeral services for Mr. Mathews will be held at 11 o’clock Tuesday morning from the home of his son, Glenn D. Mathews, 260 East Main street, with burial in Highland Park cemetery. Rev. Paul Stewart will officiate. Mr. Mathews had been a resident of Ionia for the past six years having moved here from his home near Portland. Born in Ionia county he had spent but a short time as a resident outside, when he was briefly employed in Flint and Marine City. Virtually his entire life had been spent on Ionia county farms and in Ionia city, where he had modernized the home where he died, and made it one of the city’s attractive dwellings. Mr. Mathews was born on the farm of Barney and Rachael Mathews, his parents, in Orange township, on what was known as the Grand River turnpike, a half mile south of Carbaugh’s corners. His parents had settled there in 1836, pioneers of Orange, and he was born April 3, 1863, one of four boys and four girls. Of the family of eight he was the last to go, following in death his wife who passed away July 24, 1931. Mr. Mathews had wide acquaintance in his home county both among its farmers and its city residents. His friendly manner, his jovial smile, his enjoyment of life and a hearty kindliness made everyone his friend. Surviving him is his son, Glenn D. Mathews, of Ionia, from whose home the last rites will be held, and one grandson Richard.
