Mrs. Mathews Dies Sunday

Mrs. Glenn D. Mathews, 56, widow of Glenn D. Mathews, former chairman of the
Michigan state public trust commission under former Gov. Frank Murphy, died Sunday
afternoon at 3:40 o’clock at the Ionia Community hospital following an extended
illness.  

Born in Trufant March 13, 1884, Mrs. Mathews was the daughter of Richard and Alice
Ross, who moved to Ionia when Mrs. Mathews was three years of age.  She had lived in
Ionia since.

Mrs. Mathews attended the Ionia public schools, and in 1903 was graduated from the
Ionia High school.  During her final years in high school she went to live with Mr.
and Mrs. Benjamin Vosper, where she resided until her marriage to Glenn D. Mathews
of Portland December 29, 1917.  Her parents had moved from Ionia, and she continued
to live with and make her home with Mr. and Mrs. Vosper.

She was a member of the Women’s Literary club of Ionia, the Ionia City University of
Michigan Alumni club, and of the Ionia Country club.

Mr. Mathews died April 27, 1937, shortly following his appointment by Governor
Murphy.

Mrs. Mathews is survived by her son, Richard, her mother, Mrs. Alice Ross, of Ionia,
and a sister, Mrs. George Dye, also of Ionia. Two nieces also survive.  They are
Mrs. Theodore Kalkuka, of Manila, P.I., and Mrs. Thomas Keller, of Charleston, W.V.

Funeral services are to be held from the Mathews home at 260 East Main St., Ionia,
at 2 o’clock Thurs. with interment in Highland Park.  Rev. Paul L. Stewart, assisted
by Rev. Adam Westmaas, will officiate.  The family requests that flowers be
omitted.
