Mathewson, of Portland. Grief over the death of her husband, which occurred a little more than a year ago, is believed to have been partially responsible for the subsequent death of Mrs. Emma S. Mathewson at her home on Kent street last Thursday evening. Although Mrs. Mathewson had been ill for about two weeks the fact was not generally known, she having called on a number of her neighbors only a few days preceding her death. Congestion of the liver was the nature of her illness, but her condition was apparently improving when she was suddenly seized with heart failure at 7:30 Thursday evening. Dr. Alton, the attending physician, with Dr. Martin, Mrs. George A. Dow, Mrs. Chas. Kelly and Mrs. B. W. Jackson, a neighbor, were with her when she breathed her last. Emma S. Dow was born near Bellevue, Mich., June 9, 1855, being in her 59th years at the time of her death. At the age of two years she moved with her mother to Sunfield, and in 1865 the family came to Portland, settling on the farm north of the village now owned by T. J. Lockwood. Mrs. Mathewson’s mother, the late Caroline Dow, built the house which now stands on the Lockwood farm. On September 20, 1878, deceased was married to E. J. Mathewson, who passed before her December 29, 1912. The couple were greatly devoted to one another and when Mr. Mathewson’s health failed, a number of years ago, the wife became a constant companion. It was a familiar sight to see her pushing him about in his wheel chair, and the union was demonstrative of the merits of that oft- repeated biblical expression, “Those whom God hath joined together let no man put asunder.” Grief over her husband’s death was no doubt partially responsible for the subsequent demise of Mrs. Mathewson. There are no children and the Mathewson estate, which is generally believed to be large, will undoubtedly be apportioned among the brothers of Mrs. Mathewson and other near relatives of the husband. The four brothers who survive Mrs. Mathewson ore George A. Dow, Danby; H. A. Dow, Denver, Colo.; Dr. S.M. Dow, Cleveland, O.; W. H. Dow, an inmate of the Pontiac state hospital. The funeral services were held at the late home Saturday afternoon at 1:30 conducted by Rev. W. W. Slee, of the Methodist church, and were largely attended. The many floral tributes evidenced the high regard in which Mrs. Mathewson was held by her many friends.
