David was born July 26, 1948 in Ionia to Arthur and Donnabelle Matthews. David is survived by Karen, his wife of 33 years; two sons, Kris (Becky) Matthews, of Ionia and Todd Matthews, of Port Charlotte, Fla.; and grandchildren Alan and KayLee Matthews of Ionia; brothers Paul (Marilyn) Matthews, Wayne Matthews, Steve Matthews, and Willie (Teri) Matthews all of Ionia; sisters Marlene (Alan) Housler of Manistique, and Neola Gereau, of Gladstone, in the U.P., and many nieces, nephews and special cousins. Dave attended school in Ionia. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served both Stateside and in Vietnam from 1968 to 1971. After his Military Service, Dave began Vietnam Veterans Chapter #354 in Ionia. He was also instrumental in raising funds for and establishing the Vietnam Veterans and Korean Veterans War Memorial, which stands on the Ionia County Court House lawn. He was a member of American Legion Post #110 in Port Charlotte, Fla. and Moose Lodge #998 in Ionia. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed playing cards, horse shoes, watching baseball, racing and football. A long-time chef, Dave enjoyed cooking and making his own glazes, sauces and gravies. David was preceded in death by his parents, sister Lorna Garyait and nephew Jason. Family members held memorial services in Ionia earlier this week.
