Matthews, 34, of 260 East Main street, died at his home Wednesday afternoon after a long illness. He was born in Ionia, April 7, 1922, the son of the late Glenn D. Matthews and Georgia Ross Matthews. In 940 he graduated from Ionia high school and later attended the University of Grand Rapids. He was inducted into military service in 1942 at Camp Walters, Texas and served with Company D of 53rd battalion. One and one-half years was spent overseas with the 66th division. He was discharged from the Army in 1946 and moved into his present home in Ionia with his family. June 8, 1943 he was married to Beryl McPherson of Ionia. In the past years he has been employed by Coe Auto Sales and Berger Motor Sales. He was an active member of the Presbyterian church, a member of the Elks, a life member of the Fishing and Hunting club, V.F.W. and a member of the American Legion. His survivors besides his wife, Beryl, are a son, Richard Ross, 5, a daughter, Marcia Kay, 8, and an aunt, Mrs. George Dye of Iona. Funeral arrangements have been made by Boynton’s funeral home and the services will be conducted Saturday afternoon, August 18 at 2 o’clock from the Presbyterian church with the Rev. Heath Goodwin officiating. Interment will be in the family lot at Highland Park cemetery. There will be a memorial fund for the children’s department of the Presbyterian church.
