Mrs. Mattison was born in Steuben county, New York, August 10, 1840, and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Valentine Van Wormer. Both her parents were natives of the state of New York and spent their entire life there. Her husband was the late William H. Mattison and was reared on the home farm in Rensselaer county, New York. Mr. Mattison taught school for a number of years in his native state and also in Michigan. Upon the three months’ call in 1861 for volunteers to serve in the Union army during the Civil war, he enlisted and was drilled with his company for four or five days, at the end of which time he received a honorable discharge on account o f defective hearing. Four years before their marriage Mr. Mattison came to Michigan and located in Ronald township near Palo. Here he went to work as a farm hand receiving $15 per month. During the winters he taughte school in the district schools of that township and was thus engaged working on farms during the summers for three years, at the end of which time he bought a 200-acre farm in the township. Mr. and Mrs. Mattison were united in marriage November 14, 1866. From the time Mr. and Mrs. Mattison took up their residence in Ronald township, Mr. Mattison was recognized as one of the leaders of the republican party in the district. In 1876 Mr. Mattison was elected sheriff of Ionia county and so capably did he perform his duties that he was re-elected for a second term. However, at the close of his term in 1881 Mr. and Mrs. Mattison moved back to their farm home in Ronald township. In 1903 they sold the farm and came to Ionia to live. Mrs. Mattison was one of the oldest members of Queen Esther Chapter, Order of Eastern Star. Both Mr. and Mrs. Mattison were members for many years of the First Methodist church of this city. Mrs. Mattison was also an active worker in the various organizations of the church and Sunday school. A niece of Mrs. Mattison, Mrs. Robert Sturdevant, and husband, of New York, have been staying with Mrs. Mattison for a number of months. Mrs. Eugenia Ackerman, a sister of Mrs. Mattison, came to Ionia to live with her sister following the death of her husband. Mrs. Ackerman passed away a little over a year ago. Mrs. Mattison is survived by one sister, Mrs. C. W. Stanton of Cohocton, New York, and two brothers, Emery L. Van Wormer of Eustis, Florida and Eugene Van Wormer of Wallace, New York. The funeral service will be held from the home at 312 Rich street Wednesday afternoon at 2:30. Rev. Charles J. Kruse will officiate. Burial will take place in the family lot at the North Plains cemetery.
