A. D. Franco, who was also at work with Maturan was badly cut in the arm. The trouble grew out of the allegation of J. Lafella, that timekeeper J. P. Corcoran, was short one day on his accounts. Corcoran, with the cashier, J. C. Cosgrove was paying off the men at the corner of Division and Maple streets when Lafella objected to the amount received. He protested and later some twenty other of the men made united protests and followed immediately with the volley of paving bricks and pieces of cement paving foundation. They closed in on the cashier and timekeeper with drawn knives and Maturan and Franco heroically rallied to the assistance of the two men. The timekeeper and cashier succeeded in making their escape and the crowd of infuriated Italians vented its anger upon Maturan and Franco before patrolman William Brennan, with drawn revolver, dispersed the rioters. He afterward arrested the Evell brother and found on Jack Evell, a stiletto, the blade of which was stained with blood. Maturan walked unassisted to Tibbs drug store, where Dr. Catlin attended him and Franco. Both lost great quantities of blood and the doctor ordered Maturan’s removal to the hospital. His worst fears were realized when on examination it was found that the man’s lungs were pierced by the knife. He grew weaker until two o’clock in the morning, when he died from shock and hemorrhage. He was the son of Frank Maturan of this city, nightwatch for the Belding Hall Co., and had worked here for some time. His body was brought home for burial and services were held in the M. E. Church Wednesday morning conducted by Rev. J. W. Sheehan.
