John W. Maxwell, Sr., age 86, went to be with the Lord on Friday, October 3, 
2014.  He was born on February 26, 1928 in Elkton, MI the son of Thomas and 
Sarah Maxwell. 

John was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War and is 
retired from G.M. after 36 years of service.  He was an avid bowler and was 
inducted into the Bowlers Hall of Fame.  John was a member of the First Baptist 
Church in Portland and sang in the choir. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Maxwell in 2007.  He is survived 
by his life partner, Esther Irrer; son, John (Debbie) Maxwell, Jr.; daughter, 
Sarah Maxwell; nine step children; three adopted children; 23 grandchildren and 
numerous great grandchildren. The community will mourn the loss of John W. 
Maxwell, Sr.

The Funeral Service will be conducted by Pastor Gary Coleman at 1:00 p.m., 
Thursday, October 9, 2014 at First Baptist Church in Portland.  Interment will 
follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Lansing.  Military Honors will be 
provided by the V.F.W. Post #4090.  The family will receive friends 5-9 p.m., 
Wednesday at the Lehman Funeral Homes, 210 E. Bridge St., Portland.
