May, formerly known as Sister M. Rosalind, SSJ, 86 of Kalamazoo, passed away Oct. 22, 2003 at Borgess Medical Center. Katherine was born in Portland March 15, 1917 the daughter of William and Anna (Bohr) May. Katherine lived in the Kalamazoo area for 38 years. She graduated from St. Camillus School of Nursing. The Catholic University of America and St. Louis University. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Kalamazoo and was a lifetime member of the American College of Health Care Executives, the Parchment Garden Club and various other organizations. She was a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Nazareth for approximately 38 years, serving as both a member of the Leadership Team and SSJ Hospital Consultant. She spent 44 years in the health care field, which included service as vice president of St. John Hospital in Detroit, president of St. Joseph Hospital in Flint, director of the St. Joseph Hospital in Flint, director of the St. Joseph School of Nursing, president, Board of Trustees Member and other administrative roles at Borgess Medical Center, Kalamazoo. At the time of her retirement, Katherine was vice president of Patient Care Services at Borgess. In retirement she wrote two family history books, those of the May-Reist and the Bohr-Huhn families. In addition to her parents, Katherine was preceded in death by sister, Mary Ann Spitzley, Elizabeth May, Ruth May Spitzley, brothers, Harold May, and William May. Surviving are sister, Dorothy Barker of Portland, Laurina (Robert) Spitzley of Muliken, Sister Joan M. May, SSJ of Goodrich; brothers, Robert (Marie) May of LaVerne, Calif., Fred (Germaine) May, Carl (Germaine) May and Leon (Geraldine) May, all of Portland; many nieces and nephews, many dear friends, including Esther Barrett and Martin and Barbara Verzi all of Kalamazoo. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Rev. Shamaun Beas, Associate Pastor Oct. 27 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Portland, Rite of Committal followed in Portland Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland. Contributions may be made to the Fr. Flohe Foundation or Catholic Common Ministry of the Diocese of Kalamazoo. The family would like to give special thanks to Sister Betty Veenhuis, SSJ and the staff at Borgess Medical Center.
