March 18, 1954 MRS. BERDIE M. MAYNARD Mrs. Berdie M. Maynard, 67, widow of the late Dr. H.M. Maynard, was found dead at her home, 157 East Washington St., Saturday afternoon, March 13. Her son -in-law and daughter, Mr. And Mrs. Robert Furrow of Hastings, came for a week-end visit with Mrs. Maynard and entered the home. Coroner Dale Kauffman, next door neighbor, saw the Furrows arrive and went in the back door and talked with the couple for a few minutes. When Mrs. Maynard did not appear, they looked for her and Mr. Kauffman found her on the floor of a room adjoining her bedroom. Death was caused by a heart condition from which she had suffered about three years ago. Mrs. Maynard was born March 17, 1887, in Berlin, the daughter of Thomas and Gertrude Sherwood. She attended the Berlin Center school, and was graduated from the Ionia county Normal in Ionia High School, For eight years she taught in the Orleans school. In 1915 she was married to Dr. H. M. Maynard, and they lived at Tremayne's Corners for six years. IN 1921, they moved to 157 East Washington where she had since resided. Dr. Maynard died in 1942. Mrs. Maynard was a member of the First Methodist Church and of the Lora Goodwin Circle. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Robert Furrow, of Hastings; a son, Dr. Mason Maynard, of Grand Rapids; and four grandchildren. A brother, Harrison Sherwood Route 2, Ionia, died suddenly in Tampa, Florida, February 24. Rev. Heath Goodwin, Ionia, assisted by Rev. R .G. Dunbar, of Grand Rapids, officiated at the funeral service held Tuesday afternoon from the First Methodist Church. Mrs. Lillian McArthur, of Remus sang, with Mrs. Dale Rosecrance as accompanist. Bearers were Wayne Sherwood, George Coppes, Herbert Possehn, Harold Scheiern, Don Pierce and Glenn Coon. Burial was in Balcom cemetgry.
