Mr. John Jay Maynard, one of out best citizens, was on his way to the depot to meet his sister from Montana whom he had not seen for many years. In going to the depot he crossed the railroad bridge; but he had scarcely got on the bridge when he heard the whistle of a locomotive behind him. Apparently thinking he had time to cross he started to run, but before he had crossed the trestle the engine, which was a wild one hastening in to get out of the way of the mail train, caught him and dragged him about two rods, bruising him shockingly. Had he stopped on the bridge he would have been safe as the walk is outside of the rails, but the trestle is narrower. As he was not seen to look around it is thought he did not realize how close the engine was. He lived about two hours. Mr. Maynard leaves a wife and two children in good circumstances, leaving a large property and an insurance on his life for $5,000. The funeral, Sunday morning, was the largest ever held in this place.
