Mrs. Maynard was married to her late husband, Gardner Maynard, Esq., in Washington county, N.Y., on the 6th of March, 1827. They came to Washtenaw county in this State in 1837, and settled in the township of Portland over 40 years since, being among the pioneers to whose hard toil and manifold privations we are indebted for the opening up and development of our beautiful State. Mr. and Mrs. Maynard’s home was cheered by the presence of eight children, some of whom were entrusted to them for only a short time, while others for a longer period gladdened their hears, but of them all only Charles h. Maynard, Esq., of this village and Ether A. Maynard, Esq. of Montana, are now living. The husband and father departed this life some ten years since. This brief illusion of pioneer life and domestic history enfolds an experience known only to those who passed through it, but through it all Mrs. Maynard exhibited the truest affection for her family and friends, disclosed more than ordinary executive ability, was cheerful and hopeful, and for nearly 40 years was sustained by the grace of God. For many years she suffered almost constantly from rheumatism, and during several of the last years of life was seldom able to leave the house. She manifested a firm trust in God, was patient and hopeful, and toward the last longed to depart and be with Christ. She was a member of the Baptist church. The funeral was attended on last Sunday afternoon at their house of worship by a large concourse of friends, among whom where many of our old citizens. The services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. A. E. Mather, and Rev. Levi Tarr of the M. E. church. She has gone to be with the Lord, and her memory will long be fragrant in the hearts of a large circle of friends. Miss Jessie Maynard returned from Olivet Saturday to attend the funeral of her grandmother Mrs. Parnel Maynard.
