Mays, 72, of 6385 Whites Bridge Road, Belding, died Wednesday, May 24, at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. She was born on Sept. 29, 1916, in Lake Odessa, the daughter of William and Alice (Mallison) Hough. Hough retired from the Mitchell-Bentley Corporation in Ionia in 1963, after 20 years of employment as an assembler. She was a lifetime member of the Sheridan VFW Auxiliary. She married James Mays, who survives her, July 23, 1953 in Angola, Ind. They had three daughters: Mrs. James (Shirley) Cowles and Mrs. Robert (Joyce) Carlson, both of Belding, and Mrs. Alger ‘Toby’ (Beatrice) Johnson of Gowen; and one son; James Mays of Southfield. Also surviving her are 14 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one brother, Devine Hough of Saranac. Three sisters and two brothers preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 26, at 1 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Belding. The Rev. Kendall Harger will officiate. Burial will be at the Otisco Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. A memorial has been established for Mays to benefit the Alvah N. Belding Library.
