The Ionia Sentinel-Standard, Thursday, August 6, 1942
Mrs. Bertha McAlary, 82, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank Gierman, 
406 Harter street, Wednesday afternoon, August 5, at 3:40 o’clock, following 
an illness of more than three years.

Born in Ireland, May 10, 1850, she came to the United States at the age of one 
year with her parents, James and Ann Cross, who settled in Lyons and later 
moved to Ionia.  She attended school in Lyons.

Surviving are four children, William McAlary, of Grand Rapids, Mrs. Frank 
Gierman and Mrs. Lee Panney of Ionia, and Mrs. Ed. Shorkey of Detroit, 14 
grandchildren and one great-grandchild.  Her husband, William J. McAlary, died 
in 1938.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. at the SS. Peter and Paul 
church of which Mrs. McAlary was a charter member o f the Rosary society.  
Interment will be in Mt. Olivet cemetery.
