McArthur, widow of the late Giles McArthur, died at the old home in Oakfield, March 1st, 1906. She had been feeling unusually well during the day and went to bed at the usual hour in the evening. At about eleven o’clock she began feeling badly and called her son Lewis and the housekeeper, who with several near neighbors did all they could to relive her but she died inside of an hour and before a physician arrived. The deceased was born in Leroy, Genesee county, New York, and at the age of 20 years was married to Giles McArthur in Ohio. They came to Michigan and located in Oakfield in 1847, nearly sixty years ago, being among the first families to settle in that township there being but seven or eight families in the township in those early days. She was a devoted wife and mother, always attending to home duties and home ties, looking out for the comfort of her family and aiding her husband to bear the heavy burdens all early settlers had to undergo, and ever until the last doing all in her power to keep the children as near to her as possible. Three sons, Frank McArthur of Grattan, Rial V. of Grand Rapids, Lewis E. of Oakfield, and three daughters, Mrs. M. H. Pascoe and Mrs. Jane Rich, Grand Rapids, and Mrs. W. C. Spicer of Belding, survive her. Mr. McArthur died in 1901. The following tribute from the pen of Mrs. M. A. Lessiter is received: Our whole community mourn with the bereaved family the sudden death of Mrs. Harriet McArthur, widow of the late Giles McArthur, the night of February 28, shortly after midnight. They settled on the farm where she died in 1847. She was one of our noble pioneer mothers and her life work has been a blessing to all who knew her, greatly beloved by all. Three daughters and three sons, have in the death of this dear mother, met with a loss this world can never restore, but there is a place where our jewels are kept and made up to us. Her age was 81 years, 2 months and 4 days. Funeral services were held March 4, at the White Swan Baptist church, Rev. D. E. Hills of Greenville, giving a most comforting discourse from Hebrews 11-13. The burial took place at the chapel cemetery.
