McArthur, who lives in Orange township, received a telegram Saturday, Oct. 12, from Camp Custer saying that his son Melvin died that morning. He immediately went to the camp and the body was brought to Ionia, arriving on Sunday. Monday it was taken to the home of John Dillenbeck in Odessa township where funeral services were conducted by Rev. C. S. Rennells, and interment made in the Lake Odessa cemetery where the mother is buried. Melvin J. McArthur was born in Orange township, Ionia, Sept. 18, 1894, and died in the base hospital at Camp Custer, Mich., Oct. 12, 1918, aged 24 years. The greater part of his life was spent in Ionia county and much of it in Odessa township. His mother died in 1902 but the father was successful in keeping the family together, and they made many warm friends. August 28, 1918, Melvin was called to the service of his country, and entrained with the Ionia contingent. After the quarantine period at the camp he was assigned to headquarters company 77th infantry, where he served until stricken with pneumonia. His father and two brothers survive him besides many relatives and friends. A large concourse of people gathered at the services held for him, and manifested a sincere sympathy and sorrow because of the untimely end.
