He was born on September 12, 1913, in Lake Odessa, the son of William C. and Vera (Figg) McCartney. He married Evelyn Chase on May 31, 1948. She preceded him in death on August 7, 1994. Hales graduated from Lake Odessa High School in 1931, and from Davenport Business School in Grand Rapids in 1933. From 1935 to 1942 he lived in Detroit, working for Penn Electric Switch Company. In April of 1942, Hale enlisted in the U.S. Army. He participated in the invasions of Leyte in the Philippines and Okinawa. He was discharged in December of 1945, and returned to Lake Odessa and joined his father in the insurance and real estate business. He remained with the business, McCartney Agency, Inc., until his retirement in 1980. Hale was an active member of the board of directors of the Union Bank from 1957 to 1983, serving as chairman of the board of directors from 1975 to 1983. He was a member of the Lake Odessa Lions Club since 1947, scoutmaster of the Lake Odessa Scout Troop, a trustee on the Lake Odessa Village Council for six years, a member of the Lake Odessa School Board, and was a lifelong member of the Central United Methodist Church. He is survived by his sons, Mike McCartney of Lake Odessa, Mark (Sharon) McCartney of Greenville, N.C.; sister, Frances (Fred) Long of Charlotte; brother, Robert (Sally) McCartney of Ashville, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Roger McCartney, in 1984. Memorial services will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, at Koops Funeral Chapel, Lake Odessa, with Rev. Emmett Kadwell officiating. Visitation is Friday, 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sloan Kettering Cancer Institute.
