McCartney Passed Away After Few Hours' Illness Saturday Morning. Funeral Monday. ------------- After twenty or more years of being an invalid caused by a stroke of paralysis, Mrs. May E. McCartney quietly passed away, with her children near her, in the home, Saturday morning about nine o'clock. She had seemed unusually well the day before even walking with her mother down town. Her death came even more suddenly than that of her husband William H. McCartney just six weeks before who was stricken with pneumonia. Mrs. McCaartney's affliction deprived her of the power of speech which was a great handicap through the years especially as she was of a literary turn of mind and had always been able to take her place socially as well as to preside over her home. Mrs. McCartney was a member of Central Methodist church many years. She was president of the Lake Odessa Woman's club in 1902-3. She and her mother Mrs Alice Cowell were instrumental in organizing the Woman's club library which flourished many years and then after the school house burned was turned over to the school of which she was a graduate. The older women of the village will recall many interesting events in the early life of May McCartney which her years of forced seclusion have dimmed. The funeral was held at the home Monday afternoon, Rev O. F. Bulman, a former pastor, and Rev. A. T. Cartland, the present pastor, officiating. Burial was at Lakeside cemetery. OBITUARY May E. Cornell was born in Ionia, Mich., November 18, 1870, the daughter of Alanson and Alice Cornell. She died at Lake Odessa, December 2, 1933, aged 63 years, 15 days. She was united in marriage to William H. McCartney on Thanksgiving day, Nov. 26, 1891. To this union four children were born. She has been a member of Central Methodist church for nearly 50 years. She leaves to mourn their loss, her mother Mrs. Alice M. Cowell, one brother Ray A. Cowell, four children; William C., Alice J., Grace M. and Arthur H., and nine grandchildren, all of Lake Odessa.
