Funeral Thursday. Not often is this paper called up on to record a death that came as such a surprise as that of the death of William H. McCartney, owner and manager of the large double store in the center of main street. Mr. McCartney had what was termed a cold early last week but nothing that seemed to need medical care until Thursday, just one week before his body was placed in its last resting place. From the time of his first medical attention til the end, everything that could be done was done but pneumonia developed in it worst form and death followed Tuesday morning. Mr. McCartney came to Lake Odessa in 1889, less than a year after it became a village. He and his brother Hale, who died in 1908, started a general store, which has continued and is today the largest store in the village. Mr McCartney has been the leading spirit of the store through the 44 years of such service to the public. For twenty years he has been Vice-President of the State Savings bank here. He was President of the village when the village water system was installed, and served several terms as councilman. He was also a member of the board of education for thirty years. He was a member of the Commercial club. William McCartney's advice was sought when any new project was to be instituted. He was conservative and always demanded to be sure of a position before he gave it his sanction. The thing that his family will cherish his memory most for, was his kindness to, and his consideration for his family. His home life as a husband and father is said to have been ideal. Their happiness was his highest ambition. The deceased was married in December 1891 to Miss May E.Cornell, at the home of her mother Mrs.Alice Colwell by the Rev. J.A. Phillips, pastor of the Methodist church. He leaves besides his widow, two sons William C., cashier of the Savings bank and Arthur, associated with him in the store, and two daughters, Grace, assistant cashier at the bank and Alice a successful teacher but who is a present managing the home life, the mother being a semi-invalid. There are eight grandchildren. The funeral was held at the home Thursday afternoon, Rev. G.F. Bulman of Sparta, a former pastor here, officiating. The splendid floral tributes were a silent testimony to the regard and respect in which the father and his family are held. Burial was at Lakeside cemetery.
