She was the only child born to John and Beatrice McCleary in Grand Rapids on Sept. 28, 1923. She graduated from Creston High School in 1941, took business courses and worked in the claims department of a Grand Rapids insurance company. She married the love of her life, Emerson McCarty, in 1943. In 1949, the couple bought the Saranac Advertiser, a weekly newspaper. Bea was adept at working on the Linotype machine, and later, when they sold the newspaper, she began her long career as a proofreader and billing chief when the couple started a publishing, printing and mailing company, McCarty Communications. They worked closely together until Emerson’s death in 1980. Bea had many hobbies. She was an avid reader, gardener, scrapbooker and traveler. She loved counted cross stitch and crocheting, and delighted family members and friends with gifts of her wonderful needlework over the years. For many winters, she retreated to her home in south Fort Myers to enjoy a respite from the snowy north. Bea was an active and much loved member of Saranac Community church for 65 years. Bea will be remembered for her kindness and compassion, and she will be greatly missed by her family, whom she loved unconditionally. She is survived by her two sons, Jim and Teresa McCarty of Saranac, and Bob McCarty of Massachusetts; one daughter, Cheryl McCarty Pell of East Lansing; daughter-in-law Tanya McCarty of Massachusetts; five granddaughters, Heather and Bob Hemmingsen of Belding, Annette Goss of Orleans, Natalie and Scott Vickery of Massachusetts, and Amy and Sumit Sharma of Seattle; one grandson, Andrew Pell of Lansing; and three great-grandchildren, Jozelyn Goss, Wyatt Goss and Molly Vickery. The family would like to thank the staff of Green Acres Assisted Living of Ionia for the wonderful care and love they showed Bea. Dr. Frank Schmid was Bea’s doctor for the past several years, and the family is grateful to him for his dutiful care. Services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 17, at 11 a.m. at the Saranac Community Church. A visitation is scheduled for Friday at the Lake Funeral Home in Saranac from 3 to 6 p.m. Memorials have been set up for the Saranac Community Church and the Ionia County Community Foundation.
