The deplorable accident occurred shortly after dinner as Mrs. McCormick was aiding her daughter in the house work following the midday meal. Going into the pantry to lay away some food the unfortunate lady stepped into an open stairway leading into the cellar, falling a distance of eight feet, to the bottom of the stairs, the fall resulting in concussion of the rain. During the forenoon some workmen had been in the cellar and upon leaving, the trap door covering the entrance to the stairway had been left open, unknown to the family. Mrs. McCormick was born in Chicago, April 19, 1858, and came to this vicinity with her parents, the late Mrs. James Coffey, when a small girl. For a number of years they made their home at Lyons and Muir. Following her marriage to Mr. McCormick she lived in Clare county, coming to Portland 16 years ago. For the past 14 years she had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Sara Rice. She was a member of the Episcopalian church, leading a Christian life that was an inspiration to all with whom she came into contact, her kind and tender disposition winning for her the love and esteem of all of her associates. Four children survive, Mrs. Oscar Rice at whose home her death occurred, Mrs. Peter Fineis of Lowell, Miss Helen McCormick of St. Paul and Andrew McCormick of Canton, Ohio. The funeral will be held at the residence Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock, Rev. H. F. Mitchell, of the Episcopal church, of Ionia. Officiating. Burial will be made in Portland cemetery.
