Wm. H. McCurdy Finishes Life Monday Organized Euclid Ave. Church, Detroit. Moved to Lake Odessa in October, 1927. Leaves Wife and Six Children. Rev. William H. McCurdy accompanied by his wife came to Lake Odessa from Saginaw in October, 1927, and purchased a home here on Jordan Lake street. He died at that home Monday evening after months of illness. He came here to take up the work of the Liberal United Brethren church. Ill health has required him to give up all church activities for several months. The funeral was held at the church at 9 a.m., today, (Thursday) and then the body was taken to Detroit where services were to be held in the afternoon and burial to take place. Obituary Rev. William H. McCurdy was born March 20, 1855, near Vineland, N.Y., where he grew to manhood. He took up the machinist trade in early life, and while working at that trade took up the study of the Bible. This he did in deep earnest and prepared himself for the ministry, beginning that work in 1880. October 5, 1875 he was united in marriage to Miss Deliah Jane Donsen by Rev. William H. Ketterman, pastor of St. Emanuels Lutheran church, (of which church both were members), in Jefferson, Pa. To this union nine children were born, three of whom died in infancy. In December, 1910, Rev. McCurdy moved his family to Detroit and shortly thereafter a Sunday school was organized in their home. This was the foundation of the First United Brethren church of Detroit, now called the Euclid Ave. United Brethren church - the outgrowth of this Sunday school and prayer meetings held in the McCurdy home at 714 Lincoln avenue. Mrs. McCurdy passed away on July 13, 1913. On December 19, 1919, Rev. McCurdy was united in marriage to Gertrude Hatch of Detroit, who has been a faithful companion through the remainder of his life. She has loyally done everything to make life comfortable and happy for his later years. Besides the wife those left to mourn his departure are six children: George E. and Laura R. Heltzel of Saginaw; John A., Partha E. Chalfont and Elva T. Ferrce of Detroit, and William of Lake Odessa, also 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, one sister Mrs. Lizzie Steinmetz of Washington, D.C.
