Olds Museum Newsletter - June 2010 Museum Loses a Friend and Supporter Donald (Don) J. McDowell of Lake Odessa, Michigan, passed away on June 21, 2010, near his winter residence in North Ft. Myers, Florida. He was born on a farm near Lake Odessa on March 12, 1928. He is survived by his wife Marjory, three children and five grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother (and very close friend) Kenneth (Ken) McDowell of Chelsea, Michigan. After graduating from Lake Odessa High School in 1945, Don spent two years in the army. In 1952, he graduated from Western Michigan University with a teaching degree in History and Industrial Arts. He taught in various Michigan schools for 20 years and ended his career with 20 years at Greenfield Village and Henry Ford Museum. Don had a very special passion, memory and knowledge of history in general, but had a special love for early automobiles and their related history. He accumulated a lifelong collection of antique autos, bicycles, toys, etc. Burial is in Lakeside Cemetery in Lake Odessa. The McDowell’s 1899 Olds electric, the only known surviving Olds-built electric- powered vehicle, is currently on display in the museum.
