Ft. Meyers, FL., after a sudden four month illness. He was born on a farm near Lake Odessa on March 12, 1928, the son of James A.and Ethel E.(Young) McDowell. On June 15, he married Marjory L.Jackson on her birthday. Survivors include his wife, Marjory; three children and five grandchildren; Steve M.(Chris) McDowell (Katie and Darrin) of Lehigh Acres,FL.;John P.(Karen) McDowell (Ryan and Matthew) of South Lyon; and Molly A.(Mark)Pomianowski (Jamie Fenton) of Dunedin, FL. He is also survived by his brother (and very close friend)Kenneth R. (Dolores) McDowell of Chelsea; brothers ad sisters-in-law, Wayne Jackson, Harold Jackson, Rich and Trudy Jackson, and Jim and Virginia McArthur; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by is parents; a brother, John A.(Marian) McDowell; and a nephew, Ford McDowell. Shortly after graduating from lake Odessa High School in 1945, Don Spent two years in the U.S. Army. In 1952, he graduated from Western Michigan University with a teaching degree in history and Industrial Art.He subsequently taught in various Michigan schools for 20 years, and ended his career at Greenfield Village Henry Ford Museum after nearly 20 years there. Don had a very special passion, memory and knowledge of history in general, but had a special love for early automobiles, and their related history. He accumulated a lifelong collection of antique autos, bicycles, toys, etc. Visitation will be held at the Koops Funeral Chapel in lake Odessa on Sunday, June 27 and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the Koops Funeral Home at 11:a.m. on Monday, June 28, 2010. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Lake Odessa. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested that memorial contributions may be made tot he Alethians Group of Central United Methodist Church in Lake Odessa, or sent to Hope Hospice, 9470 Health Park Circle, Ft. Meyer, Fl 33908.
