Peter and Paul’s church was filled this morning with friends of the late Thomas McGannon to attend the funeral services for him which were held at 9 o’clock with Solemn Requiem Mass sung by Rev. Fr. A. C. Schneider, of Fowler, celebrant; Rev. Fr. J. A. Klich, of Belding, deacon, and Rev. Fr. Hugh D. McCarthy, sub-deacon. Rev. Fr. H. D. McCarthy gave the funeral talk in which he paid a splendid tribute to the memory of the dead, emphasizing his loyalty to his Christianity and the high type of his devotion to duty in every station of life. It was as fine a eulogy as one man could pay to another, and found accord in the hearts of the many who heard the final tribute of praise to this latest one of Ionia’s loyal sons to step into the Great Beyond. Pallbearers represented the Knights of Columbus and the many other friends of Mr. McGannon and were E. F. Gallagher, William G. Longe, Thomas A. Carten, Frank Wirtz, Alex McAlary, and M. D. Wilson, with all of whom Mr. McGannon had been closely intimate during many years and who were representative of the numberless sincere friendships that have marked his passing through the life of his community. Among those who came here from a distance to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Grace, Mrs. Sarah Kilduff, and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Kilduff of Carson City; Mr. and Mrs. William McGowan of Hubbardston, Mrs. Bertha Scully and William H. Barrett of Detroit, Mr. and Mrs. Harry E. Spencer of Flint, Samuel Krause and Oscar Hirth of the Hirth-Krause Company, Grand Rapids. Burial took place in Mt. Olivet cemetery. Business places in Ionia were closed this morning for an hour out of respect for the memory of Thomas McGannon, who for the past 20 years had been identified with the business life of Ionia as closely as any man upon the street. The action of his business associates was a distinct tribute to his worth as a citizen in his community.
