McGowan Former Resident Laid to Rest In Westside Cemetery Was Civil War Vet Served as Drummer Boy In Ohio Company Burial services were held late Sunday afternoon at Westside cemetery, Pewamo, for Wyckliffe C. McGowan, former resident, who passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George W. Young, at Owosso last Friday afternoon following a long illness, which kept him confined to his bed for over a year. Mr. McGowan was one of the earlier pioneers of Pewamo, coming to that village shortly after the close of the Civil war, where until some 10 or 12 years ago he conducted a wagon and carriage shop and for many years was also engaged in the undertaking business. Was Boy Drummer When 16 years of age he joined an Ohio Company of infantry as drummer boy and served until the end of the war. Coming to Michigan he located in Pewamo, and in 1869 was united in marriage to Miss Rose Rudd, who together with the daughter, Mrs. Young, survive. A daughter, Maud, died a number of years ago. He is also survived by a brother, Irenus McGowan, of Portland, Oregon, and two granddaughters, Elizabeth and Georgia Young, of Owosso. The services at the grave were conducted under the auspices of Pewamo Lodge F & AM, many old-time friends and neighbors coming from long distances to pay their last respects to their departed friend. Prior to the services at the cemetery a burial service was conducted at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Young in Owosso, Dr. Eugene Allen, pastor of the Owosso Congregational church in charge. Had Mr. McGowan lived until November he would have been 80 years of age.
