He was 66 years old and had been living for the last six years at 885 North Holliston, Pasadena. Some during the early 90’s Mr. McKelvey, who with his wife and little son Mudge were living on a farm in west of Woodland, decided to move to Lake Odessa, the new fast growing village a few miles to the northeast of them, and cast their lot with the pioneers of this place. They had not been here long before he began dealing in real estate and the building of houses. For his home he built the residence on Fifth avenue now owed and occupied by Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Davis. In 1896 he built the double store building, now occupied by LaDue & Snyder, and stocked it with furniture, hardware, etc. Later he added a line of farm implements and buggies in the building next south of him. We are informed he did a big business in buggies, buying them quite frequently by the carload, which was a lot of buggies even in those days. While living here a daughter Ruth, and a son Leland B. were born. Later owing to the poor health of his wife he closed out most of his business interests here and went to California. He lived there a year or two, returned to Lake Odessa and became interested in the promotion of the Lake Odessa Malted Cereal company of which he was made manager. The factory building was erected under his supervision. In 1903 Mr. McKelvey closed out all of his interests here and moved to California, where he has since made his home. The deceased is survived by his widow, Mrs. Etta Goss McKelvey, who was his second wife; four sons, Mudge McKelvey of Tulare, California, and Leland B. McKelvey of Eagle Rock, California, sons by his first wife, and Donald Paul McKelvey and Raymond Goss McKelvey, at home, sons of his second wife. The daughter Ruth passed away some years ago.
