Charlotte O. Brown was born near Albion, in Orleans county, New York, where she spent a happy girlhood, attending the public schools, and later the Albion Seminary. When she was 10 years old she came to Ionia for the summer with her parents, who took up land west of the Welch school house in Easton township. The trains came only as far as Lansing, the most of the journey being made by ox teams. Ionia was just a few log buildings, the country surrounding it a wilderness. Indians were plentiful and the roads were paths through the woods marked by notched trees. She also spent the summer of her 16th year here, and saw much progress in clearing and settling the country. On December 28, 1865, she was united in marriage to Robert McKendry, also of Albion, N.Y., and six years later they moved to Michigan, settling on their farm in Easton, where they enjoyed a happy home. In November 1914, on account of the ill health of Mr. McKendry, they moved to Ionia, where they resided till he passed away, Nov. 18, 1916. Since that time the deceased has lived with Mrs. Cowan, her youngest daughter. For over 21 months she has been confined to her bed, the results of paralysis, and she has been a patient sufferer, bearing her affliction with remarkable bravery through the long months. The funeral services were held at the Cowan residence at 2:30 on Monday afternoon, in charge of the Rev. C. J. Kruse, who read the 14th chapter of St. John and spoke words of comfort and encouragement to the family and the large circle of friends who had gathered to pay their respects to the departed. The casket was surrounded with beautiful flowers. The body was placed at rest in the vault in the Easton cemetery, six grandsons, of the deceased, William, Harold, Allen and Elmer McKendry, and Fred and Walter Bradford, acting as bearers. Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. McKendry—Mrs. Ed. Bradford of Easton, John of Easton, Alice, who died in young girlhood, and Mrs. Elmer Cowan. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and one great-grandson. In Appreciation: We with to thank our friends for their kindness to our mother during her long illness, and for their assistance and the beautiful flowers, at the time of her passing from us.
