Former Chief of Police Dies.

Harold T. McKendry, Sr., 69, of route three died Thursday at Ionia County
Memorial Hospital.  He had been ill several years.  Mr. McKendry was a former
employee of Ionia City Water department, served as chief of police in Ionia for
nine years, and as deputy sheriff with the Ionia county sheriff’s department. 
He was recently associated with Coe Auto sales of Ionia.  A World War I veteran,
he was a member of the American Legion Girrard-Horrocks post.  He was also a
member of Ionia First Methodist church.

He was born January 20, 1897, in Easton Township, the son of John and Irma Cowan
McKendry.  He was married September 4, 1919, in Detroit to Bessie Engebretsen,
who survives.  Also surviving are one son, Harold Jr., of Ionia; two daughters,
Mrs. Lewis R. Greenlee of Waukegan, Ill., and Mrs. Alfred Heether of Belding;
two brothers, Elmer of Ionia and Edgar of Palo; four sisters, Mrs. Price
Haddock, Mrs. Leo Fuller, Mrs. Douglas Welch and Mrs. Edwin Yeomans, all of
Ionia; and five grandchildren.

The body will be at Meyers funeral home, where the family will meet friends from
7 to 9 p.m. Friday, until Saturday at 1:30 p.m. when it will be moved to the
First Methodist church to lie in state until services at 3 p.m.  Dr. Howard
Smith of Traverse City, a former Ionia Methodist minister, will officiate. 
Interment will be in Easton township cemetery.  A memorial is being established
for the First Methodist church.
