(Mike) McKendry, 50 year-old Easton township farmer was instantly killed at 4:20 p.m. Monday when he slipped and fell beneath the huge drive wheel of a farm tractor he was driving. The accident occurred on the McKendry home farm north of Dildine as McKendry and a brother, Royce McKendry, a neighbor were driving to a field to spread manure. Coroner Dale Kauffman of Ionia said the drive wheel of the tractor passed over McKendry's head fracturing his skull and jaw. He was dead on admittance to the Ionia Memorial hospital, a short time later. Hauling Spreader Coroner Kauffman said the accident was described to him by Royce McKendry, who was helping Allen prepare the field for spring. Allen was driving the tractor which was hauling the loaded spreader. The equipment was passing over the plowed ground which was frozen and the jar had set the spreaders gears into operation. He said Allen stepped from his seat on the tractor, apparently preparing to drop off the machine and throw the spreader's gears out of operation. As McKendry stepped from his seat to a position near the large left rear wheel of the tractor, he suddenly slipped and fell. He fell in such a position that the wheel of the tractor passed over his head, throwing McKendry sideways so that he fell between the wheels of the spreader which appeared not to have struck him. The tractor continued on and the spreader passed over McKendry's body without touching it. Royce McKendry reported to Coroner Kauffman that he was about 100 feet away and he ran to the aid of his brother and found him unconscious. Coroner Kauffman said McKendry probably was dead then. Royce carried his brother to a car and sped to the ______ hospital. The tractor and spreader continued until it ran into a snow bank and stopped. Life Long Farmer Allen McKendry was born January 29, 1900, in Easton township, the son of Mrs. Irma McKendry of Ionia and the late John McKendry, who died in 1944. He was reared on the home farm where he had been living until his death. On June 23, 1934, Allen McKendry was married to Fern Wandell of Ionia. They have ____ children.
