In a Moment of Despondency He Uses a Revolver With Fatal Effect. Our city was greatly shocked Wednesday morning when the news was spread that Charles McLaughlin, one of our citizens and business men had shot himself in the rooms over his blacksmith shop. When Wesley Porter, who is employed in Mr. McLaughlin’a shop, came down about seven o’clock to open up he heard a noise above and went upstairs to see what was wanted. Upon opening the door to the room he found him lying on the bed covered with blood and what seemed worst of all conscious and suffering untold agony. He told Porter to get a doctor as quickly as possible and Porter, without waiting to find out what was the trouble called Dr. Stan- who came as soon as possible to the dying man’s assistance, and after a few questions soon learned from McLaughlin that he had shot himself. He at once summoned Dr. Pinkham and they did all that they could to make him comfortable, but he passed away about five o’clock after having remained conscious for several hours. Revs. J.W. Sheehan and A. Secord were with the dying man a short time before he passed away. Deceased leaves besides a wife and son who are prostrated by the awful deed, three half brothers, Frank Haywood, of Salem, Mich.; Bert Haywood, of Saginaw, Mich., and Harry Haywood, of this city. Mrs. McLaughlin arrived here last night from Olivet, accompanied by her son, Fallie, who is studying for the ministry at Olivet college, too late to see her husband alive. Charles McLaughlin was born in Plymouth, Michigan, and was one of the best blacksmiths in the state. He was about 50 years of age and had a large number of friends who will regret the sad ending of as good a friend as any man ever knew. The shot was fired into his right temple from a 38 calibre revolver that he brought with him from Colorado about 25 years ago and the fact that he lived a moment after the firing of the fatal shot, seems almost miraculous. The funeral will be held at the home of his brother-in-law, M.A. Chapman, tomorrow morning at 10:30 and interment in Otisco cemetery.
