Arnold, one of Ionia’s pioneers, was written Tuesday September 21, when Mrs. Hugh McLeod, of Chicago, formerly Miss Mary Arnold of Ionia died after a long illness having cancer, as its cause. Mrs. McLeod was the last of the Arnold family, five of whom died within the past few years. The family of Walter Arnold consisted of the father and mother and four children, one of whom, Walter, died many years ago. The deaths of the father and mother occurred a few years ago at the home here, and were followed by the tragic death of Miss Emma Arnold who was killed by a street car in Chicago. Ed Arnold, the surviving son, died not long afterwards and the death of Mrs. McLeod completes the victory of the grim reaper over this prominent Ionia family. Mrs. McLeod had been a great suffered from cancer and for a time it has been a question of how long she would live. She taught in the Ionia and Chicago schools where she was teaching when she met Mr. McLeod and their marriage took place several years ago. She was born in Ionia and esteemed by every one there, especially the older residents and members of the families who have been closely tied in friendship to this family of honored pioneers. The funeral will be attended from the residence, 333 Windsor avenue Friday at 2:30 and burial will be in Chicago. Mrs. James Taylor of this city left today to attend the funeral.
