Peter & Paul, with the first mass at 5:30 o’clock a.m., at which the attendance was quite large. Among the faithful worshippers present was James A. McMullen, the well known ticket agent at the Pere Marquette passenger station. Mr. McMullen went to church in apparently good spirits, but had not been in church long when he was seen to arise and walk about in a dazed condition. He was taken to the parish house adjoining and laid upon a couch, where a few minutes later he suffered a severe stroke of apoplexy. He was placed on a cot, and tender hands started to carry him to the home at 108 Washington street, but the spark of life left the unconscious invalid while on the way, a very few minutes after seven o’clock. James A. McMullen was of Canadian birth, and was aged 57 years. As a telegraph operator and ticket seller he had been in the railway service many years. At Lansing he did this duty for the Michigan Central and the Pere Marquette, at the Union depot. He came to Ionia eight years ago, and has done continuous efficient and faithful duty at the P.M. depot here since. His was a position of peculiar responsibility, the sale of tickets being a mere incident. All official telegrams and telephone messages from the head offices in Grand Rapids passed through his hands for transmission to the proper local departments, a work requiring both technical knowledge and correct methods. He was what could be truthfully termed, a hard worker. The friends were shocked at the news of his sudden and untimely death. Of the immediate family, the bereaved wife and one child, Miss Susie, survive. The last sad church rites over the mortal remains of James A. McMullen, at the Church of SS. Peter & Paul, this morning at 8:15, were largely attended, the large representations from the various parish societies being especially noticeable. The solemn high mass was very impressively sung by Rev. Fr. McCarthy, and the chorus choir sang with beautiful effect. Fr. McCarthy took the words: “Blessed are those whom the Lord when he cometh shall find watching.” From Luke 12:37, as the basis for his concluding discourse. The life of deceased was held up as one of unwavering constancy to his Maker, as taught by the church, and faithful to the end, and while highly eulogistic, the praise was warranted by the Christian life which deceased had always endeavored to the best of his ability to live out. A large concourse of mourning friends accompanied the funeral party to the 10:10 train, the remains being taken to Flint for interment. The bearers were: Edward F. Gallagher, Patrick Barrett, Harry H. McGowan, Wm. G. Longe, Frank Carten and William Kilmartin. The bearers are both members of the Knights of Columbus and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and accompanied the remains to Flint as representatives of the two fraternities.
