Long time Ionia business man dies

Former owner of McNamara’s Drug Store in downtown Ionia Martin D. McNamara Jr.,
66, died unexpectedly from respiratory failure Thursday in Almagordo, N.M.  He
was born Sept. 10, 1931 the son of Martin D. and Mildred E. McNamara, both
deceased.  He was a graduate of Assumption High School in Windsor, Ontario and
Ferris State University.  He married Phyllis Bradley on August 11, 1956.

In 1965, McNamara took over the family business, which was Ionia’s second
oldest, consistently owned store, brother John McNamara said McNamara’s father
bought the drugstore in 1920, and it remained within the family until McNamara
retired in 1977.

While in Ionia, McNamara was active in many civic affairs and is a former member
of the Ionia Downtown Development Authority.  He is a former member of SS. Peter
and Paul’s Parish and is presently a member of St. Ann’s Parish in Cadillac,
where he has resided since 1938.

An avid skier and traveler, McNamara and wife Phyllis wintered in New Mexico.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis and three children, Martin D. (Pamela)
McNamara III, Patrick (Sandra) McNamara, Michael McNamara, and five
grandchildren.  Also surviving him are a brother, John McNamara of Ionia and a
sister Mary Alice Kohloff of St. Claire Shores.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at noon March 5, at SS. Peter and Paul’s
Parish with Fr. Mel Fox presiding.  Memorial contributions can be made to the
Elks Major Project Fund.
