Jan. 16, 1985 IONIA – Robert Bruce McPherson, 64, of Ionia died at Ionia County Memorial Hospital late Tuesday morning, following a heart attack at his home. A retired Ionia businessman, he was born in Ionia May 26, 1920, the son of Robert and Marie Haysmer McPherson. He attended Haynor School and Ionia High School, and was married to Roberta Easlick in Breckenridge Jan. 20, 1940 They made their home in Greenville, Alma and Lake Odessa before moving to Ionia. A veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II, he was discharged from the service in 1946. In 1947, he and his wife opened Bruce’s Sport Shop on North State Road and continued as its owners and operators for 16 years. In 1963, in partnership with David Steere of Ionia, he built and operated Evergreen Mobile Home Community on north State Road. That business was sold in April 1982. An avid hunter and fisherman, he was a long-time member of Ionia County Fishing and Hunting Club and served the club as president. He was also a member of Ionia post VFW and a member of Travelers’ Protective Association. Surviving are his wife; four sons, Terrance and Roger of Ionia, James of Saranac and Brian of the U.S. Virgin Islands; seven grandchildren; his mother, Marie McPherson of Ionia; a sister, Mrs. DeVilo (Beryl) Bishop of Ionia; and s sister-in-law, Bonnie McPherson, of Paris Tenn. His father and a brother preceded him in death. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Leddick Funeral Home Thursday at 7 p.m., with the Rev. Kenneth Harger of Shiloh Community Church officiating. A memorial has been established for the Ionia County Fishing and Hunting Club, in care of the funeral home or in care of the family residence.
