D. and met his death by being drowned while bathing in Grand River near Ionia, July 19, 1916. The family moved to Michigan when he was 11 months old and located on the Barney McQuillan farm in Ionia township, this being the old McQuillan homestead. He lived here nearly all his life with the exception of one winter spent in Alabama; one summer in South Dakota; one year in New York and the last two years in Ionia. He attended the Gerham School til he completed the eighth grade receiving his diploma May, 1904. The following September he entered the Lyons high school graduating May, 1907. A few months later he entered a business college in Grand Rapids, completing the course the next spring. He was a brilliant student but his health would not permit him to hold a position that confined him indoors. He was well liked by all his teachers, never causing them any trouble. At home he always kept the welfare of the rest in mind, never shirking a duty, but trying to make life more pleasant for all. He was always ready to extend a helping hand to those in need. He was an honest, industrious young man, highly esteemed by all who have known him since early childhood. February 9, 1915, he married Miss Emma Bugbee at the home of her parents near Collins. They lived on a farm for a short time, then moved to Ionia where they have since resided. One son was born to them, Jan. 23. 1916, but he lived only a few hours. He is the second victim Grand River has claimed out of class of 1907 of Lyons high school. Oliver Kelley, a friend and classmate, met the same fate Dec. 24, 1909. He was a member of M. W. A. Ionia camp, No. 1655. Besides the widow and parents, he is survived by a sister Mrs. Melvin Lapo, a brother, Leon and many other relatives. The funeral was held at the home of his parents in Ionia, July 17, Rev. R. B. Chapman officiating, assisted by Rev. Cyrus Mendenhall; singing by Mrs. Eugene Smith and Mrs. H. E. Spencer. The bearers were Gordon Fitch, Leo McQuillan, Bernie Humphrey, Bernie Somers, Leslie McKee and James Brown, all being cousins of deceased but James Brown who is the only young man left of his graduating class. The bereaved family have the profound sympathy of their many friends. Why such terrible sorrow enters so many homes no mortal can understand. Those whose hearts are crushed by sorrow can only submit to God’s will and say God’s will be done.
