All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/mi/mifiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Marilyn Ransom mlnransom@chartermi.net May 8, 2012, 7:13 pm The Portland Observer, Thursday, December 20, 1923 Henry McVeigh, who was born of Scotch parentage in the village of Novi, Oakland County, Michigan, 82 years ago the 29th day of last December, died at the home of his daughter Mrs. John Hamlin, Tuesday afternoon. When but a small child Mr. McVeigh’s parents moved to Westphalia where he grew to manhood. In July of 1863 he was united in marriage to Miss Emily Sherman, of Hubbardston, but soon after his marriage he went to the Civil War and remained as a member of the Union army until the close of the conflict when he returned home. Forty-five years ago he moved to a farm about two miles north of Portland where he resided until about five years ago he and Mrs. McVeigh went to live with their only living child, Mrs. John Hamlin. Here he contracted what appeared to be a slight illness some two months ago but took suddenly worse Sunday and passed away Tuesday afternoon. Mr. McVeigh was one of the few remaining members of the G.A.R. of Portland, having been a member of John Megarah Post No. 185. The funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Moore of the Congregational church, from the late home at 1:30 Friday afternoon, with interment in Portland cemetery. One brother, Samuel McVeigh, of Portland, also survives.
