He retired in June of 1961, following 23 years of state employment at the reformatory. All except two days of his employment was in the various kitchen departments of the institution. Previous to the establishment of the steward’s department in 1947 the work was handled by various guards assigned to kitchen duty. Their activity in connection with the work was mainly to supervise inmates who did the cooking and preparation of meals. To further his knowledge for this work McVicker attended night school and took correspondence courses and the steward’s department soon became his pride and joy. He is a past worthy patron of Ionia Eastern Star and was a member of the F&AM blue lodge. Following his retirement he and Mrs. McVicker have spent most of their time at Central Lake. Surviving in addition to his wife, Julia, are a daughter, Mrs. Fred Culp of Ionia; son, Marvin McVicker of Flint, six grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Minerva Dunker and a brother, Jesse McVicker of Central Lake. Contributions will be accepted for the cancer fund at Myers funeral home where funeral arrangements are being made. ------------ Funeral service was conducted at 11:30 Monday morning for Lester McVicker, 66, of Central Lake, who died Thursday in a Petoskey hospital. The Rev. Raymond E. Bierlein, pastor of Ionia St. Johns Episcopal church officiated and interment was at Highland Park cemetery. Bearers were Ronald Reister, Fred George, Fred Culp, Stephen Hartman, William Hartman and Cecil Travis. Attending in groups were friends and fellow employes from F&AM lodge, Order of Eastern Star, Ionia State Hospital, Michigan Reformatory and Michigan Training Unit. Attending from out of town were Mrs. Jesse McVicker and Mrs. Clare Dunker of Central Lake, Mrs. E. Truesdell of Fenwick, Mr. and Mrs. Herb Conner and Mrs. Donald Taylor of Saranac, Mrs. Blanche Ward of Greenville, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Grumbly of Owosso, Mr. and Mrs. John Scholtens, Warden and Mrs. George Kropp and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Swanson of Jackson, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Niess and family of Grand Rapids, Mrs. Marian Treynor, Mary Lou and Jean Shindorf of Belding, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Melaneon, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin McVicker and Mr. and Mrs. Marvin McVicker, Jr., and family, all of Flint.
