May 11, 1944 BOXING MATCH BRINGS SUDDEN DEATH TO MAN OVEREXERTION IN FRIENDLY CONTEST TOO MUCH FOR LOCAL RESIDENT Roy W. Meabon, aged 48 years, and a long time and well known resident of this city died very suddenly at the Bird farm, east of the city, on M-44, Saturday afternoon while engaged in a friendly boxing match with Don Slater, 15 years old, a fellow worker at the Bird farm. Meabon and young Slater had been boxing and the elder man sat down to rest, saying that he was short of breath. As he got up to resume another round, he pitched forward and died instantly. Undersheriff Richard Dodes and Coroner Harry Myers of Ionia were called and after interviewing Slater and others who were present during the friendly match between Meabon and his youthful opponent, decided that death was due to a heart attack and that no inquest was necessary. Meabon was for a number of years employed by LeRoy Taylor as driver and delivery man on the Taylor coal truck. Surviving are a son, John; his former wife, Helen, both of this city, and a brother , Harold Walkley of Frankfort. The body was taken to the Fitzjohn funeral home where funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. Walter Schemmer, pastor of the Church of God, officiating and burial was in River Ridge cemetery.
