Mr. Meekhof was born in McBain Sept. 12, 1911, the son of Myne and Anne Meekhof and was the last surviving child of 11. He entered WWII in April 1944 and was a POW in France and Germany, but returned home to enjoy a full life. Moving to Maui 35 years ago, he and his sons have hunted axis deer and wild boar in the West Maui mountains and at Kaupo. Mr. Meekhof was owner of the J&J Store in downtown Portland for 36 years and always loved the people in the area. He was very active in the Portland Area Chamber of Commerce and other civic organizations. He was noted for announcing in church that the termites were better Christians than the congregation because they attended every Sunday service. Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Ruth of Kihei; children, Murray (Arlene) Meekhof of Salter Path, N.C., Mary Beth (Ron) Evans of Columbia, Calif., and Jack G. Meekhof and Jim (Sandra) Meekhof of Kihei, Hawaii: 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. A memorial service and celebration of his full and joyful life was held April 26 at Keolahoe Church in Kihei, where he was dedicated to serving God.
