Mince had been to Lowell on Thursday and had taken the evening train at that place for his home near Smyrna. When the train reached Moseley, Mince, who was quite a baseball enthusiast, saw a fellow ball player at the train and stepped off the train to talk with him. The train pulled out and left him standing there and there was no other alternative for him but to continue his way to Smyrna on foot. He started up the track and had nearly reached the county line between Kent and Ionia counties when he was struck by a train presumably the 9:26 out of Belding. This deduction is made from the fact that people in the vicinity where he was killed heard the sharp tooting of the whistle on a train about that time. Evidently the train crew did not know that they had killed him or even hit him, as no stop was made to look the matter up. When found the next morning about five o’clock one arm was found between the rails and his body was found about 105 feet from where the arm lay. Inquiry of all train men who passed over the line at night failed to find anyone who knew anything of the accident. It is thought that he was walking up the track, and when the train came along he stepped off the track but not far enough to avoid being hit. Clemence Mehney was thirty-two years of age, a son of Nicholas Mehney of Otisco, and unmarried. He was a brother of Mrs. W. F. Bricker of this city. The funeral was held at the late home Monday, and was largely attended. Deceased is survived by a father and mother, five sisters, and four brothers, all of whom with one exception were present at the funeral.
