March 3, 2009 Jack A. Mellinger, age 76, of Alma, passed away Sunday, March 1, 2009 at his home. Jack was born Oct. 10, 1932 in Ionia the son of David and Edna (Stoffer) Mellinger. He was a graduate of Ionia High School and was married to Marilyn Christensen on Aug. 17, 1949. Jack worked for his father growing up in Ionia at his Coca-Cola bottling plant. He moved to Alma in 1959 and became an entrepreneur and salesman for various businesses. In 1969 he started the Alma Hearing Aid Center which he operated for 40 years. Jack was active in the community especially with his church where he later served as an usher, youth group leader, and Cub Scout leader. He was a member of the Alma Masonic Lodge F.&A.M. Chapter #244, the Scotland USA Shrine Club, the Alma Elks Lodge #1400, and the Gratiot Medical Center’s Hospital Auxiliary where he had been active with the hospital follies for several years. He was also a former member of Pine River Country Club and served on the club’s board of directors. Jack enjoyed many things in life especially; golf, racquetball, playing cards (bridge, hearts or cribbage) and watching his Michigan Wolverines. He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Marilyn; four children, Pete (Connie) Mellinger of Alma, Jim (Marya) Mellinger of Traverse City, Susan (Eugene) Daniel of Ithaca and Doug (Chris) Mellinger of Alma; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; Alicia (Paul) Sturtevant and son, Joseph; Carrie (Randy) Heiss and children, Laila and Bodie; Holly Melliinger; Joshua Mellinger; Matthew Daniel and daughter Brianne; Kelly Daniel and her daughter, Savannah, Karley Daniel, Nicholas Mellinger, Abby Mellinger and Grace Mellinger. Jack was preceded in death by his parents an infant son, Joseph Mellinger; a sister, Helen Fuller and brother, Bob Mellinger. Funeral services for Jack will be held Saturday, March 7 at 11 a.m. at the Alma United Methodist Church. Visitation with the family will be held Friday from 2- 4 and 6-8 p.m. at Lux-Moody-Wolfel Funeral Home, Alma. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Alma United Methodist Church for the hearing assist system for the hearing impaired.
