January 31, 1975 IONIA BOTTLING WORKS FOUNDER DIES IN ALMA A prominent Ionia resident David O.(D.O.) Mellinger, 84, who for the past three years has lived at 320 Pine, Alma died early Friday morning at the Alma Community hospital after being a patient the past five weeks. Mrs.Leota Mellinger of Ionia is a sister-in-law. Born in Paulding, Ohio, October 10, 1890, he was the son of Joseph and Emma Mellinger and a graduate of the Grover Hill High School in Ohio. He served with the infantry in World War I and received the purple heart award for wounds received while in active service in France.He had attained the rank of Captain. After his discharge from the service he married Edna Staufer in Ohio in 1920. They moved to Ionia in 1921 and founded the Ionia Bottling plant on north Dexter in partnership with James Hood. He worked as a partner in the business until selling his partnership to Mr.Hood in 1952. A life member of the Ionia Elks Lodge he was also its past exalted ruler.He was a life member of the Ionia Moose Lodge, charter member and past president of the Ionia Fishing and Hunting Club. He was also a member and past commander of the Ionia post of American Legion; a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars in Ionia and the Disabled American Veterans. Among the firsts for Mr. Mellinger he received the first member of the year award given by the Ionia Fishing and Hunting club and also was recipient of the first Elks of the year award. He was a member of the Ionia board of Education in the late 1930's. Besides his wife, Edna of Alma, he leaves two sons, Robert of Ionia and Jack of Alma; daughter, Mrs.Helen Fuller of Lansing; nine grandchildren and three great- grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 1 pm at the Leddick Funeral Home. Interment will be at the Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family members will be at the funeral home Saturday from 7 to 9 pm and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Memorials have been established for the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. A luncheon will be served for the family and friends at the Elks temple following services Monday. Ionia Sentinel Standard-Sat.February 1, 1975 DAVID O. MELLINGER Funeral services for David O.
