Beulah E. Mellstead, 89, of Grand Rapids formerly of Portland, passed away on 
Tues., Oct. 9, 2001.

She was born on Nov. 13, 1911 in Lake Odessa, the daughter of Elta and Sarah 
(Foster) Bennett.  Mrs. Mellstead was a member of the Portland United Methodist 
Church and the United Methodist Women.

She graduated from Portland High School in 1929 and served on the board of the 
Girl Scouts.  After she raised her children, she worked for Barley-Earhardt in 
Portland and Mitchell Bentley in Lyons before retiring from the State of 
Michigan after 10 years of service.  

She was preceded in death by her husband, John in 1999; sisters and brothers, 
Gladys Hamilton, John Bennett, Warren Bennett, Rhoda Oliver, Aletha Bennett; 
daughter-in-law, Beverly Mellstead; and great, great-granddaughter, Maxine 
Partridge.

Surviving are her children, Donna (Hilary) Martin of Portland, Loraine (Harold) 
LeFurge of Wyoming, Allen Mellstead of Alpena and Jean (Earl) Esterline of 
Lowell; 24 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Mark Oliver 
of Boyne Falls; sister-in-law, Dorothy Bennett of Lansing; and several nieces 
and nephews.

The memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Scott K. Otis, Pastor, at 11 
a.m., Saturday at the Portland United Methodist Church, 310 E. Bridge St.  
Interment of ashes will take place later that day at 2 p.m. at Portland 
Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Portland United 
Methodist Church, or to the American Diabetes Foundation, in memory of Beulah 
E. Mellstead.  Arrangements are entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 
Portland.
