Portland Review - Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001

Beulah E. Mellstead, 89, of Grand Rapids, formerly of Portland passed away 
Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001.

She was born in Lake Odessa Nov. 13, 1911 the daughter of Elta and Sarah 
(Foster) Bennett. Mrs. Mellstead was a member of the Portland United 
Methodist Church and the United Methodist Woman. She graduated from Portland 
High School in 1929 and served on the Board of the Girls Scouts. After she 
raised her children, she worked for Barley-Earhart in Portland and Mitchell 
Bentley in Lyons before retiring from the State of Michigan after 10 years 
of service. 

She was preceded in death by her husband John in 1999; sister and brothers, 
Gladys Hamilton, John Bennett, Warren Bennett,, Rhonda Oliver,, Althea 
Bennett; daughter-in-law Beverly Mellstead; great-great-granddaughter Maxine 
Partridge. 

Surviving are her children, Donna (Hilary) Martin of Portland, Loraine 
(Harold) LeFurge of Wyoming, Mich., Allen Mellstead of Alpena, and Jean 
(Earl) Esterline of Lowell; 24 grandchildren; 39 great-great grandchildren; 
brother-in-law Mark Oliver of Boyne Falls; sister-in-law Dorothy Bennett of 
Lansing, several nieces and nephews. 

Services were held Oct. 13 at the Portland United Methodist Church with the 
Rev. Scott K. Otis, Pastor, officiating. Interment of ashes took place at 
Portland Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral 
Home, Portland.

Contributions may be made to the Portland United Methodist Church or to the 
American Diabetes Foundation.
