Menkee, well known and for years Belding’s photographer, died at his home on W. Liberty street Monday morning. His health had been failing for several years, during which time he completely lost his eye sight. About 6 weeks ago gangrene developed in his left foot and with his weakened condition little hope of his recovery was held from the first. Walter Reynolds Menkee was born July 6, 1858 in Lulland, Denmark. His parents came to this country when he was a lad of 6 years. They settled in Greenville where he attended school. Prior to coming to this city in 1885 as a photographer, he had a studio in Ionia for five years. In February of 1894 he was married to Miss Jenette Snyder who with their three children, Ernest of Akron, Ohio, George of Cedonis, Wash., and Helen Salter of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, survive. Mr. Menkee discontinued his profession after nearly 40 years of service. The building which he owned and occupied on S. Pleasant street for so many years was sold to Walter Jones, former local attorney. From April of 1908 until 1912 Mr. Menkee served as Alderman of the third ward. He was always keenly interested in political activity and civic matters and was considered a progressive citizen. He was a former Knight of Pythias. Funeral services were held from the late home on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Rev. Glenn Weimer, pastor of the Congregational church where the deceased attended in health, officiated. Burial was made at River Ridge. The deceased was the last in the family of eight children.
