Howard Lester Menold, 82, of Portland, passed away on Monday, Oct. 29, 2002, in 
Winter Haven, Fla.  He was born on Sept. 5, 1920 in Thompsonville.  Howard was 
a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II, where he met and married 
his wife, Phyllis in Bristol, England in 1944.  Mr. Menold was an industrial 
engineer for Mitchell Bentley-A.O. Smith, a life member of the VFW Post #4090, 
member Masonic Lodge #31 F&AM, and past president of the Kiwanis Club.

Howard and Phyllis were the owners of Menold’s Flower in Portland for many 
years.  Since retirement, they have made Winter Haven, Fla. their winter home 
and Portland their summer home.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sumner and Geneva Menold of White 
Cloud; son, Sumner Rex Menold of Portland; sister-in-law, Fran Menold; and 
brothers-in-law, Sam Hews and John Pearce.  Surviving are his wife of 58 years, 
Phyllis; daughter, Lyndrea (Dennis) Wieber of Portland; son John (Diane) Menold 
of Lake Odessa; grandchildren, Shawn (Rachael) Wieber, Tim (Tracy) Wieber, 
Jason (Kelly) Wieber, Rex (Tori) Menold, Carrie Menold, Eric (Jessica) Menold, 
and John Alexander Menold; great-grandchildren, Lakin, Chelsea, Tyler, Alex, 
Shelby Brianna, Hunter, Madeline, Eileen, Halie and Sumner; brother, Russell 
(Mary) Menold of Hesperia; and sister, Verda Hews of White Cloud.

A memorial service will be conducted by Rev. David L. Flagel, Pastor at 1 p.m., 
Friday at LeValley United Methodist Church, 1461 E. David Highway, Ionia.  
Military honors will be provided by the Portland V.F.W. Post #4090.  Interment 
will take place in Portland Cemetery.  Arrangements by the Schrauben-Lehman 
Funeral Home, Portland.
