Mercer Saranac, Mich., October 1. - Hon. Wm. Mercer, one of the pioneers of this section and the sole owner of the banking house of William Mercer, the only banking institution in this village, passed away yesterday morning. About 5 o'clock Mrs. Mercer was awakened by her husband who asked her if the window was not down at the top as he was very cold in the feet and legs. She replied in the negative and dropped off to sleep. Soon thereafter she was again awakened by her husband's loud breathing and endeavored to awake him, but he had breathed his last. Heart trouble was the cause of his death. Mr. Mercer was nearly seventy-six years of age, was an ex-member of our state legislature and was highly honored and respected by all who knew him. He has always taken an active part in politics and at the time of his death was president of the Bryan and Maybury club off this village. For over 20 years he has been engaged in the baking business in this village and has always had the confidence of the entire community. Deceased leaves a widow and two children, Thad. G. of this village, and Charles E. of Grand Rapids, who have the heart felt sympathy of all. Additional Comments: Hon. Wm. Mercer, the Saranac banker, died Sunday morning of heart trouble.
